A lot. Make sure the level is really hot - after all, you're not after dynamics in a vocoder, you're after the frequency bands. Whether you do that with outboard gear, or inside the modular, shouldn't matter that much, though. (Short disclaimer here: I haven't used the Nord vocoder yet, but I've used the one in the Access Virus a bit - but I'd be *very* surprised if that one acted fundamentally different).
