Morphing from sine to square
It might look too simple but sometimes it is simple. This is one way that you can move from a sine to a square wave - and get all the curves in between.

Addition/Subtraction
Why would you add or subtract on a synth?
Well, amongst other things you can add or subtract sounds, like
[Original sound] - [sound from LowPassFilterOutput] = [HighPassFilterOutput].

In this example pitch is "added" and "subtracted".
